This is a British manufactured Pattern 53/74 Martini Henry rifle. The Pattern 53/74 was a conversion of the exiting .577" calibre bayonets to suit the Martini Henry rifle Mk1. This example has War Department and broad arrow acceptance stamps and various issue numbers and dates. The blade measures 17 inches and over length is over 20 inches around 51.5 cm. The leather scabbard bears two sets of issue numbers on the brass frog stud 104 and 581. As neither set of numbers has been struck out this maybe an abbreviation for the 104th Regiment of Foot, weapon number 581? Worthy of some further research.
