US Civil War Period Battle Damaged French 1847 Socket Bayonet

This is a unique US Civil War period French battle damaged Model 1847 socket bayonet. The M1842 percussion muzzle that this bayonet was attached to exploded which in turn caused the damage to the bayonet seen in the photo's.  During the onset of the American Civil War (1860-1865), many foreign weapons of all kinds were imported by both the Union and the Confederacy to add to their arsenal.  The U.S. Government (Union) purchased 25,000 of these French muskets with bayonets and a great number were imported by HERMAN BOKER & COMPANY OF NEW YORK.
