This is an all matching numbers L2A1 -  fully automatic version of the legendary SLR L1A1. Australia, in co-ordination with Canada, developed this heavy-barrel version of the L1A1. It utiiises the same receiver, trigger assembly and bolt as the SLR but with the added option for fully automatic fire. A heavier barrel was added and a folding bipod which becomes the foregrip when folded away, and the top cover was fitted with sights for longer range accuracy. A larger 30 round magazine was also added. Only 10,000 were ever produced from 1962 and 1982 - thats on average only 500 a year!! This example is an early production low three digit serial number (257th) dating to 1965, made at the Lithgow factory in Australia. During the Vietnam War (1955 to 1975) Aussie forces were armed with the L2A1 whilst fighting with the US against the North Vietnamese pro communist forces from 1962 to 1972. Deactivated with a working action.
