This is a rare WW2 Nazi Übungs-Stielhandgranate 24 (training stick handgrenade model 24). The handle is dated and maker marked "42 brb" - Richard Rinker GmbH, Menden, Kreis Iserlohn. Above the maker code are the partial initials "Ub" (Übungsladung meaning practice load) which is the official German military abbreviation applied to this model of M24. The canister would have originally been painted red as a visual aid. They were used for training new recruits and in the latter stages of the war the civilian population or Volkssturn who were forceable initiated into military service, on how to handle and throw grenades. It has survived remarkably well when considering how many German soldiers would have potentially trained with this particular grenade. Included with it is an original porcelain ball with pull string cord and screw cap.
