This is a rare WWII US FP-45 "Liberator" or M1942 Pistol. Designed during WWII by the US military to arm clandestine and resistance forces within enemy-occupied territories across Europe. The intention was to spawn liberation of nations from within, using their own motivated civilian populations. The FP-45 is a simple single shot pistol chambered in .45 , the same round used by the Colt 1911a1 and Thompson SMG's. It was designed to be simple and quick to produce, only being manufactured during WWII. It saw service with the United States Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner to today's Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), who conducted operations against the Nazis from behind enemy lines, operating from June 1942 to September of 1945. During the war Liberator pistols were shipped to and air dropped into Europe for use by Allied insurgents being ideally suited as a close quarters assassins weapon. After the war most were destroyed. This particular pistol bears French proof markings which strongly suggests it was in France during the war afterwhich it was later proofed in France as a firearm. Included within the pistol grip storeage cavity are two inert 1943 dated .45 rounds. Deactivated with a working action.
