This is a Second World War German MG42 with a few post war replacements parts. The main body of the gun is from 1944 and is correctly marked with the makers code "dfb" for Gustloff-Werke, Suhl. The year code "M.U." was only used in 1944 and the serial number 8701c falls into the known serial block for the years production. Based on the known serial numbers from 1944, this gun would appear to be an early production example, around gun number 4,610th. On top of the main housing behind the top cover are the three Nazi Eagle 4 proofs assigned to Gustloff. The trigger guard assembly is Waffen stamped and bears the sub-contractors initials below, although only partially visible. The bipod leg assembly is maker "kur" - Steyr-Daimler Puch AG, Werk Graz , dated 1943 and Waffen stamped WaA815. The most obvious replacements are the top cover, front and rear sights and muzzle flash hider. With original replacement parts fitted this could be easily returned to a completely original wartime gun. Deactivated with a working action.
