This is a genuine WW2 British Spitfire Browning .303 machine gun that was recovered from a crash site. This gun was one of four mounted in one wing of the Spitfire and is fitted with a unique bracket that was only used on wing mounted Browning .303's on the Spitfire. The plane it came from is reputed to have crashed into the sea along the South coast of England during the war. Although the original markings normally found on the top cover have disappeared from decades of being in the sea, the serial number P9547 does help. With some further investigation it may offer the chance to indentify which plane, squadron and possibly the polit was flying the plane prior to it coming down. A rare piece of RAF wartime history - definitely worthy of some further research.
