This is a very early production German Imperial Army issued Gew 98 rifle. Dated 1906, it was manufactured by Erfurt and carries the correct Imperial army acceptance stamps. The rifles serial number 8288 has no letter suffix meaning it is rifle number 8288th of that years production!!  The regimental disc reads "24. R. 2. 65" = 24th Infantry Regiment, 2th Kompany, weapon number 65. This regiment fought in some of the most famous battles of WW1 seeing action in 1914 in Mons and Le Cateau, the final invasion of Serbia in 1915. In 1916 this regiment most famously captured the Fort Douaumont et Verdun, then in 1917 transferred to Russia and back to Nivelle, France for the spring offensive in 1918. After the succesful capture of Fort Douaumont et Verdun the regiment commanders became national heroes in Germany with a public holiday declared in their honour. This rifle exhibits the wear and tear of rifle that has seen extensive action. Note the marks on the underside of the foregrip. These marks are only made as a result of being repaired and rebuilt many times. If you are looking for WW1 German rifle thats definitely been there, then this is the one to have!!! Deactivated with a working action.
