This is an early production Enfield P14 rifle dated 1916. During the Great War it became increasingly clear to the British War Dept that additional rifles would be required to help supplement UK production. The British Government looked to the USA to fulfil the potential gap in production and contracted Winchester, Remington and Eddystone (a subsidiary of Remington created for the sole purpose of P14 production) to produce the P14 rifle. Initially production was slow, this meant that is wasn't until February 1916 that the first batches of P14s were delivered to the UK. This example is rifle number 238, 452rd from Remington's first batches of rifles delivered to Enfield in 1916. It retains its original barrel that is numbered to the receiver and is dated '16 = 1916 with the Enfield inspectors and Broad arrow acceptance stamps. The woodwork has several armourers repairs, this is a very good indication that it was damaged whilst in service. A great many P14's were back in service again during WW2 being issued to British Home Guard units. Deactivated with a working action.
