This is an early production Cold War period Walther made P38. In the early 1950s Russia posed a major threat to peace in Europe. It was decided that the West German military would need to re-arm its forces in order to defend itself against this threat. The German Bundeswehr (Federal Defense) ordered the P38 to be its sidearm of choice. Although not manufactured since 1945, Walther, using wartime pistols retooled and the first pistols were delivered in June 1957. This pistol dates to July1958 (7/58) and is pistol number 1930. The number 2 in the serial number 21930 indentifies this pistol is from the second batch. It also has an original magazine from the same year dated 6/58 - June 1958. The Bundeswehr was part of the NATO organization and therefore was required to stamp all military equipment with the NATO stock number; 1005-12-120-6168.
