This is a fascinating 1916 dated Webley MK6 .455 Revolver with both Navy and Drill Purpose markings. Very few Webley MK6 revolvers were procured by the Royal Navy during WW1, with even fewer surviving due to the huge losses of men and vessels. The vast majority were assigned to British ground forces fighting in Europe. This example has the Navy property capital N stamped on the base of the grip and underside of the barrel followed by the weapon / inventory number 645 that has also been stamped on various other parts of the gun. The DP initials are an abbreviation for Drill Purpose, this is a very unusual marking to be found on a Webley MK6. As a weapon that was only available to officers and being Navy issued, we can assume it was used for training British Naval officers. This is the first of its type we have encountered with these dual markings. Of considerable interest, you will note that the revolvers finish has very fine pitting to certain areas of its surface. This has been caused by salt water. Also the DP initials on the base of the pistol grip have been stamped on top the 45. This denotes that the revolver was retired from Naval service and then assigned for training use.
Deactivated with a working action and clear chambers. Included are 6 inert .455 rounds.
This revolver is available and is currently at the Proof House awaiting a replacemnet deactivation certificate.
