This is an FN Model D Browning Automatic Rifle (B.A.R.). The model D is considered to be the best incarnation of the BAR. FN Herstal, Belgium made many clever design improvements to the BAR developing it into one of the best machine guns of its type. The D in its designation stands for Demontal = detachable or removable. Meaning it has a quick release barrel. FN improved the ability to field strip quickly and added a very ingenuous gear to trigger mechanism. The Model D was introduced in 1932 seeing military service before, during and after WW2. An interesting fact, whilst the FN factory was under Nazi control during WW2, the Gemans for some reason decided not to continue with production of this model. This example was part of a small contract for Columbia and has all visible matching numbers of 0585. Meaning it is gun number 585th. It is missing the bolt dust cover and has had a repalcement hand made foregrip added. Original or replacement parts could be fitted if required. This is reflected in the price. Deactivated with a working action.
