This is an early First World War German Kar98 (Karabine Model 1898az) with imperial German army acceptance stamps, dated 1915 and manufactured by Erfurt. That year Erfurt are estimated to have made 313,869 carbines. The initial "A" stood for "with bayonet", the "Z" referred to the stacking L shape rod attachment. The bolt is the correct type with turned down cocking lever and is German imperial and Nazi stamps. The Kar98 was used by the original German "Storm Troopers" during First World War trench raiding parties. Being shorter and lighter than the standard issued Gew98s, it was much better suited to the confines of close quarters trench warfare. They were also used extensively by various German units and regiments including the cavalry and mountain troops with many seeing active service again during WWII. The Weimar police, SS and Nazi Para military groups also used them. Now becoming increasing hard to find. Deactivated with a working action.
