This is an exceedingly rare 1940 dated German Luftwaffe issued MG17 from the infamous Messerschmitt Bf-109 (Me-109). This gun was paired and fitted in the cowling / nose cone of the Me-109 fighter where the two MG17's were then synchronized to fire through the propellor blades. With the guns housed directly in front of the pilot it gave him a far better chance of accurately aiming and hitting a fast moving target. We know this MG17 was only fitted to an Me-109 by virtue of the unique bracket attached to cooling jacket. No other plane used it. The receiver is clearly stamped with two Luftwaffe acceptance stamps (drop winged eagles below the date designation 40 = 1940 and serial number 9554) and the initials Fl at the beginning of the Luftwaffe inventory numbers stand for "Flieger" or Aviator. The gun has clearly been involved in a crash with a slight bend in the barrel and jacket. The overall condition would suggest he crashed on the land and not at sea? The date of manufacture 1940 means that this gun may well have been used during the evacuation of Dunkirk (May to June 1940) or during the Battle of Britain (July to October 1940). A very rare find indeed.
