Deactivated WW1 & WW2 Enfield P14 Rifle

This is an intriduing First World War issued Enfield P14 rifle. Produced during WWI by US firm Eddystone (ERA) for the British war effort, this example has seen service during WWII as well. The khaki green paint on its 1916 dated barrel was applied to weapons that were to be used in hot humid conditions, such as Burma and South east Asia during WW2. The additional British inspectors stamp with a number 4 below would also indicate it was in service during this period. Another feature not often seen on P14 rifles is the sold out of service markings stamped on the barrel and stock (two broad arrows facing each other). The majority of P14 rifles were held in army reserves after WWI and later redeployed to the Home Guard during WW2. Post war saw them sold off into the civilian market however few were marked in this way. Deactivated with a working action.

 

We have included the official 1940 dated War Office directive issued to armourers explaining how to apply the Khaki paint to rifles barrrels. Note the instruction says the painting is to be carried out at home and abroad!!!
