This is one of the rarer SMLE's only being produced during the interwar period. Dated 1928, it was manufactured by Birmingham Small Arms, who during the 1920s and 1930s made significantly smaller quantities of SMLE rifles in comparison to their wartime numbers. Fom BSA's records it is estimated they only made around 100,000 rifles throughout this entire period! At peak production during WWI BSA were producing 450,000 SMLE's a year! This example is not to be confused with the Iraqi contract SMLE's being made at this time. These rifles are clearly stamped on the receiver / barrel knox with the Iraqi Arabic ownership markings. This rifle only bears British military acceptance stamps and retaining its original barrel and rear sights. With the outbreak of WW2 the British War Department gathered all available weaponry from thier inventory in preparation for hostilities. Deactivated with a working action. The rifle is available and is awaiting a replacement deactivation certificate at the proof house. This will not affect its deactivation status.
