This is an early production Second World War dated Bren MKI machine gun. It was manufactured in 1942 by Lithgow who only made 17,429 Bren's between 1940 to 1945. They produced just two batches, the first batch being numbered from A0001 to A9999. This Bren is from that first batch and is number A2916 meaning it is gun number 2,916th. In June 1951 this Bren required repair / refurbishment and was marked "6.51.F.T.R." which means June 1951 Factory Through Repaired. This is also a very good indication that it saw active during the war. A great many of the Lithgow's Bren's were issued to the ANZAC's (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) who saw service all over the world including Europe, The Middle east and Asia, on land, sea and air. Deactivated with a working action.
