This is a Chinese made Hanyang Type 88 rifle. Made in-house by the Chinese, the design is based on the German Mauser G88 and G98 rifles. Production started in 1895 and was modified twice to improve performance in 1904 and in 1930. The Type 88 saw extensive service as one of the standard frontline battle rifles, being used by the National Revolutionary Army from 1925 and throughout WWII. Production of ceased in 1944. The receiver bears the Chinese charators for the model of rifle, date code and the reversed swastika. Often misinterpreted as a Nazi emblem it has no connection with Nazi Germany. The Chinese were an allied country during WWII and saw huge losses whilst fighting against the Japanese.
