This is a First World War dated 18 pouder shell with a unique inscription on the brass shell case, and reads as follows;

GUNNER. S. CALDER.
    4th R.H.A.
7th ARMD DIV.
    8th ARMY.
  El ALAMEIN.
1st ARM DIV
     Egypt
 23 Oct 1942

This breaks down as 4th Royal Horse Artillery, 7th Armoured Division of the 8th Army at El Alamien, 1st Armoured Division, stationed in Egypt, who took part in this offensive on 23rd October 1942.

Gunner S. Calder stationed in Egypt in 1942 under the command of Monty took part in one of the most famous battles of WWII pushing the Germans out of Egypt. (23rd Oct to 11 November 1942)

This battle is referred to as the Second Battle of El Alamein which saw Lietenant-General Bernard Montgomery defeat Rommel's Afrika Corps and Axis armies and was beginning of the end of the Western Desert Campaign.
